The causes and effects of a selected issue related to redox chemistry (corrosion)
Corrosion is a form of redox reaction.
It involves the metal being oxidised by the surrounding oxygen to return to its natural oxidation state.
The oxygen in this reaction will be reduced.
The most common corrosion is wet corrosion.
Corrosion is sped up by the following factors:
Water
Impurities in iron
Impurities in water
Acidic pollutants
Corrosion can be stopped by:
Alloying metal
Protective coatings
Changing surface electrochemistry (more on this in Unit 3)
